Politics. Even the word sounds like evil and blasphemy.
Political turmoil has been at a peak in the USA, and Canada seems to be heading in that direction. With Trudeau calling the elections two years earlier than expected, it will be fascinating to see if his strategy plays out.
Regardless of who gets elected, it seems as if the people are always trying to vote for the best of the worst.
The lack of quality in political candidates is concerning. My first thought was why aren’t smarter people stepping up to the political hilltop? Surely we have many capable citizens?
The answer to that is self-explanatory. They are smart. Smart enough to know that the world of politics is on the opposite end of a dream job.
Our candidates are on split ends with all current events. Vaccine Passports, Taxing the Wealthy, Health Care, Welfare, Economic Outlook and pretty much everything else.
Regardless of who you vote for, it is very easy to see that none of the candidates will stick to the policies they campaign. The campaigns are merely an effort to get votes and once in power, the parties will do what is best for them. This is how you keep power; in essence this is how the political system works.
Every time a new leader is elected, people are excited for “change”. Soon after, people realize that their new leader is no different from the last one. Maybe even worse.
This phenomena is evident with the current administration in the USA. A huge effort was put forth to get Joe Biden elected. Regardless of your views on Donald Trump, any rational person would have thought “A 78 year old candidate who can barely speak a few sentences isn’t the best choice for change”. A few months into his appointment, people are regretting voting for him. To be fair, his case hasn’t been helped with the situation in Afghanistan or the politicization of COVID-19.
The reality is, people want a leader they can look up-to, not someone who can barely do a speech (even with a teleprompter).
The same thing applies to Justin Trudeau. His open personality (and past?) paved the way for him to take office but upon the renewal of his term, he is not the favourite to win (LINK).
The weak demeanour shown by him and his party has turned off many supporters. Unlike Biden, Trudeau is very composed but it easy to see this composure is compensating for a lack of real leadership. Canadians don’t want a leader with a good smile, they want a leader who can bring about change. A beta personality that tries to appease everyone, is simply not strong enough to do any real good for Canadians.
World leaders like Putin, Modi and Jinping all have this aura of dominance around them. It may be forced dominance, but it is enough to strike fear in the eyes of Canadians and Americans. The same cannot be said for our current North American leaders.
As the West is embroiled in socially progressive matters, the East is usurping the world economy and gaining power. Over time, we will be painfully dependent on the East to supply our economy (akin to China-USA trade).
One of biggest underlying factors in this power-shift is the struggle of North American businesses. Even before March 2020, USA & Canada had become heavily reliant on Chinese goods. We have stopped producing goods in our own country as it too expensive for businesses to do so. Not to mention the cost of liability due to increasingly strict regulations.
It is no surprise that companies choose to shelter taxes abroad, hire foreign employees and delegate business to other countries. On a pure economic basis, it is becoming less feasible to be the company that produces within the USA or Canada.
As our elections approach, it may be wise to consider the economic ramifications of each candidate instead of the social relevance.
Mainstream media has become so powerful that it can cancel Presidents while they are still in office. Social media, empowered by the younger generations, are the market that politicians are trying to tap into. If you can get a social media celebrity to signal who they are voting for, you can essentially leverage their following. Get a beautiful woman to choose a political side and any simping followers will consider her outlook as their own. That is the sad reality of the world today.
A politician dancing on TikTok is not doing so because he/she wants to keep up with current trends, they are doing so to gain your vote.
Be the person that thinks rationally. Following the crowd is the easy way out.
As a closing remark, I am reminded of a memorable quote.
I don’t even look at their political policies, I just look at their character.
- Dave Chappelle, Killin’ Them Softly, 2000
